Wall Art Size Guide: 8x10 vs 11x14 and More
One of the questions I get asked most often is which print size looks best in a space. The short answer is: it totally depends on your personal style, wall space, and how you want the artwork to feel in your home.
Some people love the charm of a smaller print layered into a gallery wall, tucked onto a shelf, or styled on a mantel. Others prefer the presence of a larger print that feels a little more like a statement piece. You can add matting for drama or cohesion.
This guide is here to help you visualize the difference between 8x10 and 11x14 prints, think through framing options, and choose the size that feels right for your space.
8x10 vs 11x14: What’s the Difference?
Both sizes are beautiful, and both can work well in a variety of homes. An 8x10 print often feels versatile, and easy to style. This size is always my first go-to, and a great size to start with when first buying art. It works especially well on bookshelves, narrow walls, entryway surfaces, gallery walls, bathrooms, and most importantly fits into most standard size frames with or without matting. Typically an 8x10 print would either be framed in a standard 8x10 frame without a mat, or an 11x14 frame with a mat. Again this just depends on your personal style preference and wall space.
An 11x14 print has a little more visual presence. It can stand on its own more easily, fill a larger wall space, and make more of an impact over a mantel, console table, or in a hallway or bedroom. An 11x14 print fits standard into an 11x14 frame or matted in a standard 16x20 frame.

Choose 8x10 if you want...
- Something versatile and easy to frame for multiple size spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, entryways.
- A size that layers beautifully into a gallery wall, stacked or paired with a companion piece.
- A print that works well on a shelf, desk, or mantel
Choose 11x14 if you want...
- A piece with more visual impact
- Artwork that can stand alone more easily
- A better fit for medium-sized wall spaces or focal piece on a gallery wall.
- A size that feels a little more statement-making.
Think About the Space First
Rather than focusing only on the print size itself, it helps to ask where the artwork is going. A print above a mantel or console table will usually want more presence than a print styled on a bookshelf or nightstand. My best tip, if you're able measure the art size ( and or frame size!) onto a piece of paper, wrapping paper, or cardboard, tape it up on your wall or space you're looking to fill. This will give you a better idea of how the piece will fit in your space. Sizes can be hard to visualize on a computer screen, so I find seeing it this way the best method.
Wall space matters, but so does the amount of “breathing room” around the piece. If you love a lighter, more airy look, a smaller print with matting can feel beautiful and intentional. If you want the art to anchor the space more, a larger print may feel like the better fit.
A frame size guide can help visualize what feels balanced in your space. But remember, this is just a guide, I always suggest the method above first and foremost, of mapping it out in your own space first.
Why I Love 11x14 for a Seasonal Refresh
If you’re looking to refresh your home for spring or summer, 11x14 is still such a versatile size. It still feels approachable and easy to frame, but it gives the artwork a little more room to breathe, especially for florals, coastal landscapes, and pieces with a lot of white negative space like the shell lady print below.
It’s a beautiful option if you want to style one statement piece on a wall, or if you want to layer a framed print with other decor on a mantel or shelf.

Framing and Matting Options
The way you frame a print can completely change how it feels. A mat can make a smaller print feel more elevated and give it more visual space, while a simple frame without matting can feel clean, modern, and relaxed.
For example, an 8x10 print in an 11x14 matted frame is a classic, versatile option. An 11x14 print can also look beautiful in a larger matted frame if you want an even more finished, gallery-style look. If you want your 8x10 print or even smaller print to have a bigger impact you can get a larger mat and frame for dramatic but classic look.

Curated Gallery Wall Inspiration
Mixing different print sizes together can create a collected, layered look that feels both personal and effortless. A combination of 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14 prints works beautifully for building a gallery wall that feels balanced but not overly structured. The first image is my personal gallery wall in my studio. It mixes photos, paintings, textures, different medias, and my favorite coastal colors.

Why mixing sizes works
- Adds visual interest and movement
- Keeps the layout from feeling too rigid
- Allows each piece to stand out in its own way
- Feels more collected and personal over time
Simple Layout Tips:
-
Start with one larger size first as the anchor piece.
-
Build around it with three sizes ( a small, medium, large)
-
Try and keep spacing consistent between frames.
A gallery wall doesn’t have to be perfectly planned, sometimes the most beautiful arrangements come together naturally over time. Look on Pinterest for inspo! Checkout some of my personal favorites here!
My Best Advice?
There’s no single “right” size, only the size that feels best in your space.
If you’re choosing between 8x10 and 11x14, think about:
- How much wall or surface space you have
- Whether you want the art to feel subtle or more statement-making
- If the print will stand alone or be part of a gallery wall
- What kind of frame or matting style you’re drawn to
Sometimes the best choice simply comes down to your personal preference and what makes you happiest when you look at it every day.
